Economy of Fish Farming
One of the fish farming most positive aspects is the resulting economic benefits to a country’s economy. Aquaculture has contributed 3,500 direct and indirect jobs to the British Columbian economy. This include year round part time and full time jobs. The unemployment rate has gone from 90% to 30% as a result of agriculture coming to the community.(www.fishfarming.com)Fish farming could provide a livelihood to many poor and unemployed as well as help create a symbiotic relation with other forms of farming, such as crop or duck farming. As an alternative source of protein, it would be less expensive and easier to raise. The development of integrated rice fish production farms and private fish farming business would boost ones country’s economy. Introducing herbivorous and onminivorous fish into the rice fields would add a new link to the food chain.
Norway for instance, which is one of the leading world producers of Salmon has in 2004, with annual production rate of 400,000 tons of Salmon, over 26,000 people are employed in fishing fleet and over 2000 of them, fishing is their main or only occupation. Norway has some 6,500 fish farm and they employ around 12,000 people. Even more people are employed in making boats, nets and fish food for the fishing industry to use.
Basic Grow-out Fish Farming Needs
Land
Fish farming as in other forms of farming, requires land. Your operation could be small scale or large scale in nature. Land requirement will depend on the size of the farm. Security of the farm area is very important to avoid encroachment by poachers, predators, and other things that may endanger the fish.Water (PH between 6.5-7.5)
There must be a good source of clean water. Borehole, dugout well, stream water or any other source free from chlorine, iron, oil or chemical contaminant is adequate. If stream or spring water is to be used, it must be properly channelled, filtered and screened to remove predators.Power supply
Electrical power supply or any other source must be provided for water pumping and circulation. There is also the need for provision of lighting.Water pumping machines
Where borehole is the source of water, a submersible pump will be required. A water pumping machine will also be required for water transfer in/out of the pond.
Water storage tank
The need for water storage tanks cannot be over-emphasized especially for concrete ponds which is a case study of this work. The storage tanks needed will depend on the size of the farm.Air pump
A sizeable air compressor may be required for water aeration depending on the size of the farm. Air pump will assist in :- Water decolourisation
- Improve water turbulence in order to make the fish more agile
- Stimulate the fish appetite.
